Spanish London chef José Pizarro, owner of the José Pizarro group of restaurants, pubs and tapas bars, opens two restaurants in what he describes as “London’s most precious and prestigious artistic space”, the Royal Academy of Arts.
In what is José’s first foray into central London, and to celebrate ten years since opening José’s doors on Bermondsey Street, the exciting new ventures allow him to unite his two greatest loves – the food and art. The two locations at the iconic Piccadilly venue were created in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts and its long-time restaurant and hospitality creative partner, Company of Cooks.
Downstairs, the Poster Bar by José will offer an informal, all-day menu of delicious tapas and drinks, while upstairs RA’s José Pizarro is a sit-down restaurant, located in the Dorfman Room of the Senate , with the same relaxed style and an all day menu focused on high quality products and the best of Spanish cuisine.
José has created a beautiful menu for both rooms. José Pizarro at RA, as gracious as it is grandiose, will offer tempting dishes, including the universally appreciated Jamón Ibérico and Presa Ibérica; his strawberry gazpacho, full of summer colors and flavors; Chipirones encebollados, beautiful squid cooked in caramelized onions, sticky and sweet; Leeks with Jose’s famous romesco sauce – nutty, vibrant and tangy; Mediterranean red prawns cooked with chili and garlic; Hake with green salsa; and croquetas in black ink. The room is light and airy and provides the perfect setting for José’s delicious menu.
On the ground floor of the Poster Bar by José, you will feel more of José’s vibe on Bermondsey Street: a lively, dynamic and informal tapas bar. The offering is a casual cafe-style menu, including the must-have Truffle Sandwich as well as several of its classic little platters: Patatas tortilla, cheese and charcuterie boards, and a changing menu, all perfect for sharing. Also available will be the delicious Empanada Gallega – a beautiful Galician dough filled with tuna, candied onion and caramelized red pepper. José’s wine and quince chorizo and unique Pan con Tomate are always big hits, as are his famous spicy shrimp fritters and silky lemon allioli.
The drinks are all proudly Spanish too. The wine list is full of exquisite labels from the main wine regions of Spain, including Rioja, Penedés, Priorat, DO Rueda and Ribera del Duero, and includes the magnificent Chardonnay de José and the magnificent Syrah cuvée de Tierra. from Cádiz. Along with a long list of sherry, there will be draft beer from Estrella Damm.
Friends and fans of José will know that he has loved and collected art for many years. He says, “When you see art, it all depends on how you feel… your whole body reacts, it’s the same with food – well, good food anyway! The creativity and soul that you find in food and art are the same… you get the same enthusiasm. Being able to bring the two together makes me so happy – it’s an incredibly proud moment for me in my career.
Jo Prosser, Director of Audience and Experience at RA, says: “Friendliness has been an integral part of the Royal Academy for 250 years: a place to meet, discuss, debate, celebrate art and culture. artists, often with a drink in hand and good food on the table.
