On Saturday October 3, more than 50 artists and more than 10 speakers came together to Democracy comes to life, a one-day virtual music festival aimed at harnessing the power of music to critically impact civic participation in the November elections and beyond. The 10-hour streaming event, powered by Nugs.TV and Plus 1generated $40,000 and counts towards nonprofit voter registration funds Effective, as well as participating artists, who remain out of work as the pandemic continues. In addition to the funds generated, Democracy Comes Alive has brought thousands of people to HeadCount’s tools to check your voter registration status and register to vote.

Among the many talented artists to offer virtual performances for the event were Dopapodwhich presented a moving cover of david bowie“The man who sold the world”. Although popularized by Nirvana during the group MTV unplugged performance, the song first appeared as the title track of Bowie’s 1970 album of the same name.

In their submission to the Vote Awareness fundraiser, Dopapod played the Eastern influences found on the track, including keyboardist Eli Windermanthe use of the tabla, and the guitarist Rob Compasitar effects. The recording itself is sparse, as Compa pops out of the mix from time to time, with an emphasis on the reverb-soaked instrumentation and Winderman’s watery vocals.

“When we were trying to figure out what song to record for DCA, we knew we wanted to find something that made a little more sense than just another Dopapod song or a random cover,” Winderman said. live for live music. “’Man Who Sold the World’ seemed like an appropriate choice to me, mainly for the title of the song. As we begin the most important election of our lifetimes, we hope all of our fans will come out to vote and make their voices heard.
