Donald Trump against Spanish leader José Andrés

Donald Trump’s racist remarks about Mexican immigrants are still bearing fruit. And unfortunately not just for the Republican candidate.

While the political and economic ramifications of the comments cannot yet be fully understood, particularly in terms of Trump’s performance in the presidential race, the integrity of some of those who resisted the tycoon could cost them a lot of money.

This is the case with Spanish chef José Andrés, who was set to open a Spanish restaurant at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, but announced that he had changed his mind about the company on July 8.

“Trump’s recent derogatory comments about immigrants made it impossible for me and my business to pursue the opening of a Spanish restaurant at the Trump International Hotel in Washington,” the chef said in a statement released by the Spanish newspaper El País.

Days after withdrawing the deal, Trump filed a lawsuit against Andrés, an American citizen and a proud immigrant. Trump says the chief’s businesses – ThinkFoodGroup and Topo Atrio LLC – are expected to pay $ 10 million for breach of contract.

“This trial is both unsurprising and unfounded. Simply put, Mr. Trump’s comments made it impossible for ThinkFoodGroup to participate in this project and constituted a violation that the owner, Trump Old Post Office LLC, has refused to remedy, ”the food group said in a statement. writing. “And despite our attempts to negotiate an amicable resolution, we were ultimately forced to terminate the lease. We had every intention of running a successful business that celebrates and welcomes people and cultures from all over the world. The owner has allowed Mr. Trump to put the burden of his inflammatory statements on us, so operating an upscale Spanish restaurant is no longer viable for us there.

Former Mexican diplomat Jorge Guajardo decided to help the Spanish chef by launching an Indegogo crowdfunding campaign raise funds to help with Andrés’ legal defense. The goal is to raise $ 100,000, and approximately $ 7,400 has been raised so far, in the last 14 days.
